Rallyween r015 Update - Music!

In the latest update I added music to Rallyween, and damn it makes a difference! Music and sound are most of a game's atmosphere so I'm glad Rallyween, er, has one, now. I made the music on these evil glowing bastards:It's a smorg of Korgs! A Volca Sample for drums, special fx and general rumble, Volca Keys for phasey fuzz, Volca FM for sounding like the Terminator soundtrack, Volca Bass for BASS BABY, and a Korg Monotron for oooeeEEEeooeoeoeoooo. I mean you gotta. On the right there is a Maker Hart 5-input mixer. It runs off a usb battery (as does everything really), so a few of these songs were made on my bed in a hotel room. It is truly the future! :D I also occasionally use a guitar Delay pedal from the FM into the mixer to give it a bit more presence.

The thing about Volcas is you can program them, and trigger them, but only in short bursts, so doing a whole song with keychanges and timing changes is, while not impossible, a bit of dick. But you can tweak and edit and program them live, so what happens is you end up drinking a beer or two and flinging yourself around the room to your quickly created sick ass beats. So the music in Rallyween is edited down from the original 20+ min each jam sessions. I aspire to one day afford a sequencer so I can change key and stuff, but I also really like the chaos of doing things this way.

The other limitation is that it was all mixed live, so I couldn't go back and pick out bits I liked, or shuffle things around. In the future I'll try using a multitrack to record with, but as it is any fades etc were all done live, what's in the game is literally chopped up parts of what was recorded.

But! They sound HUGE, don't they?! Every one of them sounds so fat and warm and rounded. The Sample especially can kick some lush BASS out, which I wouldn't have expected from a digital device. I've made a lot of songs in Nanostudio (iOS) (It's GREAT, the songs will go into Wanderers, when I get my head in gear) and they sound great, but there's something about analogue synths that punch right out the speakers and into your face, then through your face and into your ears. Love em. And the best thing about Volcas is they just sound so good together, whatever you do they sound like there's still friends with each other. Which is the main thing, that everyone's getting along.

ANYWAY. Yeah so I put the music in, and was about to update when I realised I wanted sound effects too, so down the rabbit hole I went. I used SFXR for the sounds, and chopped them / tweaked them up in Wavepad. The thing about sounds is when you put one in, it sounds super obvious when there ISN'T a sound for something else, it almost sounds worse, so I really tried to get everything. I will probably still improve things from here, but right now it's hanging together pretty good I think.

I also changed the garage a bit to look more appealing. And made skeletons explode. And added some handy keys for streamers to unfullscreen/music!

Go check it out!!

Next I'm going to work on the look of the game some more, it needs more atmosphere, more smoke, more clouds, more SPOOK.

Have a great evening! :D
